Three years ago, my husband and I bought a fixer upper. Our master bathroom was low on our list, but a surprise leak stemming from our shower pan moved it to the top.

If you want to get a quick rundown of all the supplies and materials used here it is! Read on for a more detailed discussion (I promise not to give you my life story starting from age 3).

The Before

Before and after of the bathroom.

When we moved in, the master bath was a hot mess. The before pictures are not even a true before because we had already replaced the destroyed linoleum in this picture. Aside from the flooring (and the toilet – eww), it was a low priority because it was functional. However, our shower pan wound up leaking and it pretty much destroyed EVERYTHING.

Our Goal

We wanted to create a functional Master Bathroom that was both beautiful and practical. Some major things I wanted to fix were the small shower, the storage in the vanities, and making it a rich bold space.

We did not knock down any walls or make changes to the basic layout.

THE VANITIES

After searching and searching, I could not find a vanity that fit the look I wanted which was something in teal with some decorative elements that were a little unexpected. Ultimately, we decided to have them custom built. I opted for vanities that fit the space entirely because I did not feel like having to clean under them. I’m zero percent sorry about that.

Here is my initial sketch

The vanities in progress

It was difficult to pick a color but ultimately, we decided on Cape Verde by Sherwin Williams (Cascades by Sherwin Williams was a close second) and we picked out these handles from Wayfair https://brandcycle.shop/198cd and these faucets, also from Wayfair, https://brandcycle.shop/7bnr7. The light fixtures were the perfect vintage vibe (also from Wayfair –noting a pattern?) https://brandcycle.shop/bgaqp.

We added an outlet drawer on my side to make it easier for hair drying! (Also, if you haven’t tried it – you definitely need to try the Revlon Blow Dry Brush! https://amzn.to/3GB0XsY)

We built them with adjustable shelves. So, I have lazy susans on one side https://amzn.to/3CSa1sl and a makeup organizer on the other https://amzn.to/3Hh80Zz.

To catch the overflow, we used these little mirrored trays https://amzn.to/3ILdqwW.

And of course, the bathroom would not be complete without Mr. Calloway the lion https://amzn.to/3QIZB42.

I headed over to Anthropologie to grab our towel rings https://brandcycle.shop/nwhgh, towel hooks https://brandcycle.shop/osz5l, and hand towels https://brandcycle.shop/9rlkp.

THE TUB AND SHOWER

It was going to be too cost prohibitive to move everything around in our master and frankly the current layout was the one that made the most sense. Unfortunately, this meant we couldn’t steal extra space to make the shower bigger.

However, some simple changes really helped improve the space.

The first step was to get rid of the dividing wall between the shower and the tub. Mama loves her tub too much to make it all one shower! The wall took up needless space and accomplished nothing.

We also got rid of the pre-fab shower and put in a custom one. This way we could move the shower footprint forward to be flush with the tub space. Plus, the glass made it feel bigger.

If you’re building a custom shower, you definitely want to add built in niches and a foot rest/ razor spot.

Here is the shower head we used https://amzn.to/3IQhR9R. You also want a hair catcher shower drain https://amzn.to/3ZFIpjM. Trust me on this.

Finally, with all that glass, you need a squeegee https://amzn.to/3QJ266q and this soap scum remover is nothing short of miraculous https://amzn.to/3CSoODg.

For the tub, I added a chandelier because DUH – I had to! https://amzn.to/3H7mgUt. I decided that pops of pink would perfectly balance with the teal, black, and white. Here’s our bath runner (Anthropologie) https://brandcycle.shop/9zhtg and the pink bathmat https://amzn.to/3WgbhMC.

We love the aesthetic of our tub faucet, but it does fill the tub a little slow https://amzn.to/3khcHt5.

I added apothecary jars https://amzn.to/3GLuP5N for Epsom salt https://amzn.to/3Xa4Pbo, bath bombs https://amzn.to/3H7qNGt, and sea sponges (we got ours in Tarpon Springs, Florida). For color we did vases https://amzn.to/3CPWK3C with pink pampas grass https://amzn.to/3kjbykS and blue pampas grass https://amzn.to/3Xcm4ZO.
